Wesel Identity
Competition

The city of Wesel has a great history. Wesel developed into a major trading city during the late Middle Ages. The city became a member of the Hanseatic League during the 15th century. Today Wesel is a district town with about 64,000 inhabitants.

As part of a competition, the students developed a new logotype and identity for the City of Wesel. This produced 35 concepts by 36 students. The project was carried out in close cooperation with the city's officials. The process included a “public input” event and meetings with the various advocacy groups. In addition, an important basis for the conceptual work was a study conducted in 2016, in which 850 people were questioned about their views of the city.

The winners were: Antonios Jansen-Gessas (1st prize), Lena Lengner and Mara Heemskerk (2nd prize), Quyen Ta Ngoc Mai (3rd prize). The jury consisted of the Mayor Ms. Westkamp, representatives of the council and the administration as well as the experts Jürgen Adolph (KW43) and Prof. Kai Bergmann (Augsburg University of Applied Sciences).

The City Council voted by a large majority for the realization of the winning design. The concept will now be further developed and implemented.

Antonios Jansen-Gessas
First place winner

The symbol refers to the Rhine or rather the importance of the city’s various bodies of water; it also has the shape of a ‘W’. The jury praised the strength, uniqueness and retentiveness of the symbol, as this was what mattered most, and yet is particularly difficult to achieve: to design a simple, yet unique symbol. According to the jury, the overall concept is highly functional as well as lively, likeable and contemporary. It has a high recognition factor and, at the same time, offers the potential for flexible expansion in the future.
